Assistant, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Services
Position SummaryThe Assistant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Services (DHOH) works under the direction of the DHOH coordinator to ensure appropriate services to students, staff and visitors to Oregon State University who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, as required by State and Federal laws and in support of the University mission of equal opportunity for all individuals without regard to disability.
Position in Concordance with DASThe purpose of the office is to provide equal access to higher education for students with disabilities. The position supports the division by actively incorporating the campus compact commitments into the daily activity of delivering services. With direction from the Director and input from classified and academic staff, the services are designed to be supportive, ensure compliance, and promote the development of student self-advocacy skills while maintaining fundamental academic and technical standards. DAS's services and personnel interactions are designed to be purposeful, open, just, disciplined, caring and celebrative. DAS serves the mission of OSU by providing access and educational opportunities to a population historically disadvantaged in higher education: students with disabilities.
Assistant ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Services assists the program coordinator in scheduling interpreters and real-time captionists for appropriate classes and events as requested by approved students in the program.
Captioning Program ResponsibilitiesAt the discretion of the program coordinator, the DHOH Assistant runs the captioning program according to the requests made by students or professors in classes approved for services. These responsibilities include communication with professors and/or university staff for video activity schedules, assigning transcribers to video projects, and using technology resources to legally create captioned copies of videos not equipped with closed captioning.
QualificationsThe Assistant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Services at Oregon State University must be a student at the university and have basic current knowledge and skills in computer function and audio/video technology. As the position requires communications with university professionals, the assistant must have experience in the areas of tact, phone etiquette and proper email communication. Until the position is further developed, this individual must be open to creating or changing program procedures and resources at the request of the coordinator or due to requirement of program activities. In addition, there must be an understanding and conscious effort in working with students with disabilities and maintaining confidentiality agreements. In conclusion this individual must have general knowledge of office procedures, be strong in written and verbal communication and have the ability to adapt to a fast paced disability services work environment.

Alternative Formats Aide
The purpose of the DAS office is to provide equal access to higher education for students with disabilities. The position supports the division by actively incorporating the campus compact commitments into the daily activity of delivering services. The services are designed to be supportive, ensure compliance, and promote the development of student self-advocacy skills while maintaining fundamental academic and technical standards. DAS's services and personnel interactions are designed to be purposeful, open, just, disciplined, caring and celebrative. DAS serves the mission of OSU by providing access and educational opportunities to a population historically disadvantaged in higher education: students with disabilities. The alternate formats aide reports to the Alternate Formats Coordinator & Departmental Computer Administrator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Notify appropriate faculties of the need to provide syllabus.
- Track book requests.
- Search and order CDs that might be available at RFBD or the state library.
- Assist with pick up/return of books to OSU Bookstore.
- Assist with creating E-Text materials.
- Assist with filing and organizing data and resources.
- Ensure E-Texts are provided to the students in a timely manner.
- Respond to service requests in the absence of the Coordinator.
- Assist with tracking checkout/return of CDs from students.

- Use a computer to word process, access database information, email, and the internet.
- Detail-oriented.
- Work well independently and as a team member.
- Maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule.

- Able to maintain confidentiality.
Alternative Testing Services Aide
The purpose of the DAS office is to provide equal access to higher education for students with disabilities. The position supports the division by actively incorporating the campus compact commitments into the daily activity of delivering services. The services are designed to be supportive, ensure compliance, and promote the development of student self-advocacy skills while maintaining fundamental academic and technical standards. DAS's services and personnel interactions are designed to be purposeful, open, just, disciplined, caring and celebrative. The Alternative Testing Services Aide reports to the Alternative Testing and Notetaking Coordinator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Pick up and drop off exams;
- Organize and maintain proctor files and testing services paperwork;
- Input and update testing information on website;
- Work effectively with other departments on campus;
- Assist with training and monitoring testing proctors;
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Communicate effectively in writing and orally;
- Use a computer to word process, access database information, email, and the internet;
- Detail-oriented;
- Work well independently and as a team member;
- Maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule;
- Problem-solve in stressful, complex situations;

DAS Production Staff
DAS Production Staff report to the Program Manager of Technology and Production Support Services.

Notetakers report to the Notetaking Coordinator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Keep in contact with assigned student through email;
- Take accurate and legible notes;
- Attend class daily;
- If class is missed, obtain a copy of the class notes for the student;
- Update contact information using DAS Online Services;
- Enter your CRNs each term online in order to be matched to a student;
- Sign the electronic contract and Memorandum of Understanding;
- Notify Notetaking Coordinator with any issues or problems.
Notetaking Services Aide

- Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and monitoring of notetakers;
- Data entry of DAS students and notetaker schedules (and other information as necessary);
- Monitor and notify notetakers and DAS students regarding completion of Agreements and Invoices;
- Work effectively with other departments on campus;
- Other duties as assigned.

Testing Proctors report to the Alternative Testing Services Coordinator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Select proctor assignments that fit within your schedule;
- Log in to DAS website daily to check for updates or changes;
- Follow proctor policies and procedures to administer scheduled exams;
- Sign the electronic contract and Memorandum of Understanding;
- Notify Alternative Testing Services Coordinator of any issues or problems.
